The Robert Giard Foundation, in partnership with Queer|Art, is proud to announce the winners of the Robert Giard Grant for Emerging LGBTQ+ Photographers, Annie Flanagan ($10,000) and Clifford Prince King ($5,000). We also acknowledge the excellent work of our finalists, Phyllis Christopher, J Houston, Jessica Martinez, Nelson Morales, and Bryson Rand.
For the first time, The Robert Giard Foundation will award two grants, one for $10,000 to the grant winner and $5,000 to the runner-up, in order to support emerging LGBTQ+ photographers whose work deals with sexuality, gender, or LGBTQ+ identity. Artists who are self-taught, early career, or otherwise emerging lack the financial and institutional support of more established artists.
As Flanagan explains, “This award will allow me to get lost in this work. It will allow focus. It will allow me to devote time, which I believe is the most important gift you can give to a project. I am eager to contribute to a queer archive in the tradition of Robert Giard, to make work dedicated to the queer environments and persons I love and those I have yet to meet—more than a fleeting moment, a portrait we deserve.”
